So, I've been playing around with an idea for a Christmas inspired cupcake, and, instead of going for the usual overblown, over-the-top decorations often used on Christmas cupcakes, I have decided to focus almost solely on the flavour.
"What flavours remind me of Christmas?", I asked myself. Thinking back to my childhood days, my memory is filled with visions of hours spent stuffing oranges full of cloves (a very mild form of slave labour inflicted on us by my mother), of cinnamon wafting through the house during the making of mulled wine, and, of course, endless chocolates and toffees. I would normally include roast goose, bread sauce and roast potatoes as well, but I'm not sure these would be conducive to a tasty cupcake.
So there you have it: a rich dark chocolate cupcake with a hint of cinnamon, a cream cheese frosting seasoned with orange zest and drizzled with salted caramel. Here's the result:
